2026 The Three-Week Check-In

Erica Rice • 20 January 2026

Is Your Financial Fresh Start Still Fresh?

We're three weeks into the new year. How's that financial fresh start feeling?

If you started January with big money goals but they're already feeling overwhelming or abandoned, you're not alone. In my experience, this is exactly when most people's financial resolutions start to fade.

But here's what I've learned: sustainable financial wellness doesn't come from dramatic overhauls—it comes from small, intentional adjustments that actually fit your life.

The Mid-January Reality Check

Think of your finances like your wellness routine. You wouldn't expect to transform your health overnight with an extreme diet you can't maintain. The same principle applies to your money.

Instead of asking "Am I doing everything perfectly?" try asking:

  • What's one money habit that's actually working for me right now?
  • Where do I feel the most financial stress?
  • What would make my money feel more aligned with what I value?

Three Small Shifts That May Create Big Change

1. Automate One Thing
Pick just one recurring expense or savings transfer to set on autopilot. When money moves automatically, you free up mental energy for things that actually matter to you.

2. Review Your "Financial Vital Signs"
Just like checking in with your body, checking in with your money doesn't have to be complicated. Look at your cash flow for last month—what surprised you? What felt good? What felt off?

3. Align One Expense With Your Values
Find one area where your spending doesn't reflect what you truly care about. Maybe you're overspending on convenience but underspending on connection. Small realignments can shift how your entire financial picture feels.

The Well-Wealth Approach

Financial wellness isn't about perfection—it's about creating a plan that feels sustainable, transparent, and actually supports the life you want to live.

If your fresh start needs a refresh, that's not failure. That's self-awareness. And self-awareness is where real change begins.
